Physical Education

Intent

At St Michael’s Infant School we aim to inspire all children to develop a love of physical activity and sport. Through good physical education, whole school values and a whole child approach, we aim to nurture resilient, independent children who will strive for their personal best. We listen to our children curiosity and needs and provide them with a range of active experiences and clubs. We want to aid our children in obtaining the values and skills to celebrate and respect the success of others, as well as modestly celebrating their own successes.  Through a skill based curriculum the children are able to show creativity and flair to become confident participants throughout their physical education journey. We aim to ensure that our delivery of physical education allows all children to have the skills and mindset to leave primary school with the capabilities to be successful in their sporting challenges and active lifestyles at secondary school and beyond. We strive to educate both our children and families to develop a greater understanding on how to live healthy lifestyles and make healthy choices. We are dedicated to ensuring healthy minds, as well as bodies and will continue to support our children's well-being. We have strong links with local clubs and partnerships within our community to ensure the children and families receive the support and knowledge they need.

Implementation

The objectives of the National Curriculum are followed closely and have been embedded into St Michael’s P.E. progression document.  We have recently adopted the Get Set 4 PE scheme which enables all children to independently build upon previously taught skills in order to be continually challenged.  PE at St Michael’s provides challenging and enjoyable learning through a range of sporting activities including: invasion games, net and wall games, striking and fielding games, gymnastics, dance, swimming and outdoor adventurous activities.  Children participate in two high quality PE sessions each week and in addition are encouraged to participate in the extra-curricular activities on offer.

Impact

At St Michael’s, we ensure that our PE curriculum is inclusive and progressive and allows all children the opportunity to acquire and develop fundamental knowledge, understanding, skills and techniques and apply these to a wide variety of different sports and activities.  PE lessons are fun, enjoyable and challenging and all children can achieve, to the best of their ability, in a supportive, safe and stimulating environment.  Our children are physically active and this has a positive impact on their learning in the classroom.  Children understand how to lead a healthy lifestyle and the importance of regular exercise.  In PE, we also measure impact by:

  • Learning walks
  • Pupil voice
  • PE & Sport Premium analysis
  • Analysis of participation in after school clubs
  • Photo’s and videos of children’s practical work.
